“Turn a Single Earring into a Necklace with Crocheted String” is a project that came from my daughter. She came home excited with a single metal earring she found on the pavement and asked me to turn it into a necklace. At the time, I had been considering beginner projects with double crochet, so this felt like a sign!
This is a tutorial that will walk you through an amazingly easy, yet elaborate-looking string to crochet, using just the fundamental stitches of double crochet. It can upgrade a necklace with a central focal piece in minutes.
Why Try This?
Needless to say, there’s no reason to wait for such a finding. We all have pieces of jewelry that are ruined or in need of a makeover and this is a great, easy project. All you need is some thread and interesting central piece- it may come from necklaces, earrings that are too big to wear or that one is lost, or even different items that you would like to wear. For example, the dark fuchsia and silver central piece was originally created for Christmas decoration, but I found it was too good to leave for Christmas.
Turn a Single Earring into a Necklace with Crocheted String– Steps
Level: Easy
Techniques Required: Double crochet
Materials:
- Thread: Thin crochet or macramé thread (for this project, I used waxed fuchsia thread and black polyester thread, 300 denier)
- Hook: Thin lace crochet hook (I used 0.9mm/US 12-13 size)
- Central piece: The earring or pendant you want to transform into a necklace
- Jump ring: To suspend the central piece
- (Optional) A couple of seed beads to decorate the loose ends
Steps:
Part A: Making the String
1. Chain 3 stitches.
2. Double crochet (dc) into the third chain. Chain 2, then turn.
3. Work a double crochet (dc) in the gap between the two stitches. Chain 2, then turn.
4. Repeat Step 3 until the string reaches your desired length (use a necklace you already have as a reference for length)
5. Stretch the string to give its full length before finishing off.
Part B: Finishing Off
1. Attach a jump ring to your central piece and thread the crocheted string through it.
2. Secure the loose ends by making a double knot. Hide the excess thread by weaving it through the stitches. If using synthetic thread, trim the ends short and carefully heat them with a lighter to seal. (Be cautious with the flame!)
3. Alternatively add seed beads to the loose ends for extra decoration. Trim the ends to about 8cm (3 inches), make knots, and heat the ends to seal. (Be cautious with the flame!)
Conclusion
And that’s it! “Turn a Single Earring into a Necklace with Crocheted String”is a project that can be completed in less than an hour, even if you’re new to crochet! It looks intricate and detailed but it is easy to make and will cost you next to nothing. Isn’t all that sweet? I would really like to see the necklaces you make. I also wish that, like my daughter, you come across unexpected findings to make your day- this one definitely made mine!
